Business suits are
expected with a slightly more relaxed focus on Fridays. Generally, smart
casual is recommended for all forms of social engagement in New York
with the exception of some restaurants where formal attire is required.
As the weather is cold in the winter and hot in the summer, visitors
are reminded to come suitably equipped. Hats, gloves and scarves and
snow proof footwear can be essential.
Greeting Someone in New York
For business purposes a firm,
friendly handshake and use of first names is the norm in New York. American's
are generally very friendly and hospitable. Similar behaviour from visitors
will ensure social success.
New York Business Hours and Banking
As with all major cities,
New York City's business hours vary from one industry and sector to
another but in general, most office environments operate between 09.00
and 17.30, Monday to Friday. The majority of banks are open between
09.00 and 15.00, Monday to Friday with some staying open to 17.30 or
18.00 one day a week. Some of the larger banks will probably also be
open on Saturday mornings.
New York Smoking
An issue that is traditionally
one of great controversy in New York, smokers are warned to be very
careful when choosing a place to light up. Most public places have banned
smoking altogether and the penalties can be severe.
